Japan Exchange Group and IBM to run proof-of-concept blockchain test

Leader Call – February 17, 2016 – IBM Garages for blockchain app design and implementation: To help accelerate the design and development of blockchain applications, IBM Garages will open in London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo to enable IBM experts to collaborate with developers on the design and implementation of blockchain for business.

Blockchain is widely associated with Bitcoin, an alternative currency. The argument is that blockchain technologies are immune from tampering and there’s actual supply and demand backing a currency like Bitcoin. Using IBM’s new blockchain services available on Bluemix, developers can access fully integrated DevOps tools for creating, deploying, running and monitoring blockchain applications on the IBM Cloud.

“The Hyperledger Project has ramped up incredibly fast, a testament to how much pent-up interest, potential and enterprise demand there is for a cross-industry open standard for distributed ledgers”, Zemlin said.

“For example, as an IoT-connected package moves along multiple distribution points, the package location and temperature information could be updated on a blockchain”, read IBM’s press release. IBM also sees blockchain as a way to manage business contracts and automate agreements.

The basis of the announcement came after IBM submitted nearly 44,000 lines of code to the Linux Foundation’s Hyperledger Project, an open-source group which IBM is a founding member of. Hyper Ledger has a series of big-name premier partners including ANZ, ABN-Amro, IBM, Intel, JP Morgan, Red Hat, VMware and Wells Fargo to name a few.

Mika Lammi, who heads the Internet of Things (IoT) division at Kouvola Innovation, is very enthusiastic about the pairing of IBM’s Watson system with the new cloud blockchain developer suite, “The IBM Blockchain fabric, together with the Watson IoT platform, offers great potential to bring together the physical and digital worlds in a way that has never been done before.” said Lammi. Code samples are on Github.

IBM is hoping to use blockchain in order to coordinate some of its back-end systems and make the process of leasing out computer equipment more streamlined.

Tech giant IBM has announced the launch of its new blockchain as a service platform.
